Sometimes, people believe false and even flat-out weird things about cleaning companies. If this is you, don’t worry, we aren’t judging you. In fact, it is quite understandable that these myths persist and why you might believe one or two of them. But we want to help clear away the misconceptions. Having wrong assumptions could put you at risk for a bad cleaning vendor relationship, a situation sure to cause headaches. However, we want to help you avoid that scenario by popping the balloon on four commonly held myths about janitorial services.

Here are 4 myths about janitorial services and the companies that perform them:

Myth #1 – Larger Companies Are Always Best

The old phrase, ‘bigger is always better,’ is by no means true when it comes to the janitorial industry. It is true that some companies might be too small to service your facility. Perhaps they don’t have the financial or people resources to take on an account of your size. So the element of truth in this myth is that a company needs to meet some basic size criteria. However, after meeting the size requirement, there is no evidence to suggest bigger companies are better. In fact, some companies might get so big that they lose focus on being able to service regular customers in local markets.

Myth #2 – All Cleaning Companies Are Basically The Same

This is an understandable myth to believe. From the outside looking in, a cleaning company seems like a gas station. They are all basically the same, provide the same service, and some janitorial companies are cheaper than others. However, this is far from the truth. Cleaning companies can vary widely in the quality of their workers, the effectiveness of their training methods, the intentionality of their quality control, and their responsiveness to your requests. Cleaning companies provide the same basic service, but all cleaning companies are not the same, nor do you want some of them cleaning your facility.

Myth #3 – Anybody Can Clean

Similar to the previous myth, this one is common to believe. Most people understand the work of ‘cleaning’ is not complicated, and nearly anyone can perform this service. In fact, we all do it in our own homes. The value the cleaning company brings to you is not that they can clean, although that is important; rather, their ability to manage the cleaning services well is what makes their service valuable. Sure, anyone can clean. However, not everyone can lead a team of people over the course of several years to consistently service the varied needs of a given facility.

Myth #4 – The Cheapest Price Is Always Best

The last and perhaps most persistent myth believed about janitorial companies is that the cheapest price is always the best option for your facility. It is true that budgets often dictate what we can spend on a given service. And if one bid is significantly higher than another, the right move is usually to pick the lower price. However, price (particularly on the low end) is often a reflection of the service you will receive. A low-ball price will frequently come with a low-ball service. We recommend picking the vendor you trust most, feel will most satisfactorily meet your facility needs, and believe will give you the peace of mind you are seeking from a cleaning vendor. If price is still an issue, attempt to negotiate before turning to the low bid.
